VMworld 2012 Tech Round Up



VMworld 2012 San Francisco, has been and gone in the last week, and below is a quick compilation of exciting and noteworthy news, and some links for more information:

Exciting news:

> VMware has killed the vRAM memory tax with vSphere 5.1 - hurray! [1]
> VMware vSphere Data Protection (VDP) replaces vSphere Data Recovery, and is built on EMC’s Avamar deduplicating backup technology [2]
> New 5.1 versions for vSphere, vCloud Director, vCloud Networking and Security, Site Recovery Manager [4]
> Best of VMworld 2012 awards including the winners - FalconStor RecoverTrac 2.5, Layer 7 API Portal, HotLink Hybrid Express, Tintri VMstore T540 with Tintri OS 1.4, Atlantis ILIO Diskless VDI, Piston Enterprise OpenStack, DynamicOps Cloud Suite 4.5, Intigua Systems Management Virtualization [5]

Other noteworthy news regards vSphere 5.1 / ESXi 5.1:

> Anticipated release date September 11th! [3]
> Shared nothing vMotion live migration (running VMs can be teleported between servers using their own locally attached storage) [1]
> Virtual Machine Version 9 hardware [1]
> Any VM that was generated on ESX 3.5 or later can run atop ESXi 5.1 unchanged [1]
> Support for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 [1]
> VMs now support up to 64 vCPUs (up from 32), whilst memory support is unchanged at 1TB/VM (identical to Hyper-V 2012 with up to 64 vCPU and 1 TB memory per VM) [1]
> Support for over 1 Million IOPs per VM [1]
> New and improved CPU virtualization technique for VMs: virtualized hardware virtualization or VHV for “near native access to the physical CPU” [1]
> A new web-based client that can be used instead of the vSphere Client Console, and snaps into vCloud Director [1]
> A new Standard Edition with Operations Manager [1]
> Costs: Essentials $495 across 3 hosts with maximum two sockets each, Essentials Plus $4,495 across those same 3 hosts, Standard $995 per socket, Standard with Operations Manager $1,995 per socket, Enterprise Edition $2’875 per socket, Enterprise Plus $3’495 per socket [1]
