How to Migrate from vCenter 4.0 on 32-bit Windows to vCenter 5.1a on 64-bit Windows – Part 2/3

This article is split into the following 3 parts:
1/3 The Journey to SQL 2008 R2
2/3 Installing vCenter SSO and Inventory Service
3/3 Installing vCenter 5.1 and Database Upgrade

5) Installing vCenter Single Sign On

5.1) Mount the vCenter 5.1a .iso (VMware-VIMSetup-all-5.1.0-880471)
5.2) From the vSphere 5.1 VMware Product Installers, click on vCenter Single Sign On and then click on Install

5.3) Following the prompts to install vCenter Single Sign On…
vCenter Single Sign On Deployment Type
Select – Create the primary node for a new vCenter Single Sign On installation (since this will be our first node)
And click Next >

5.4) vCenter Single Sign On Type
Select – Create the primary node for a new vCenter Single Sign On installation (leaves the door open to a future HA configuration)
And click Next >

5.5) vCenter Single Sign On Information
Set the password for the admin@System-Domain account (user name can be changed later)
And click Next >

5.6) vCenter Single Sign On Database
Here we choose – Use an existing supported database
And click Next >

5.7) Database Information
Enter the information for your SSO Database, server, and users
And click Next >

5.8) Local System Information
Provide FQDN of the vCenter Single Sign On local system
And click Next >

5.9) Security Support Provider Interface Service Information
Here we use our vcserver account and credentials
And click Next >

5.10) Destination Folder
Select the folder in which to install vCenter Single Sign On
And click Next >

5.11) vCenter Single Sign On Port Settings
We can leave the SSO HTTPS port on the default 7444
And click Next >

5.12) Ready to Install
Click Install!

5.13) If all goes well the ‘InstallShield Wizard Completed’ screen is displayed as below.
And click Finish

6) Installing the VMware vCenter Inventory Service

6.1) From the vSphere 5.1 VMware Product Installers, click on VMware vCenter Inventory Service and then click on Install
6.2) Following the prompts to install VMware vCenter Inventory Service…
Destination Folder
Selection where to install Inventory Service
And click Next >

6.3) Local System Information
Enter FQDN for the Inventory Service local system
And click Next >

6.4) Configure Ports
Accept the default Inventory Service ports
And click Next >

6.5) JVM Memory
“Select the Inventory Service Configuration that best describes your setup”
And click Next >

6.6) vCenter Single Sign On Information
“Enter the information to register Inventory Service with vCenter Single Sign On”
And click Next >

6.7) Certificate Installation for Secure Connection
Click to Install Certificates

6.8) Ready to Install
Click Install

6.9) InstallShield Wizard Completed
Click Finish
